In A1 Level, Score 3-5:
Students begin to write in English by using words and simple statements. They begin to write about what they like and give some descriptions. They can:
- Use common words in familiar categories such as home, school, family, colors, animals and actions.
- Communicate meaning with simple sentences or phrases with frequent vocabulary and grammar errors.
- Provide very basic answers to informal questions, although frequently the answers are unclear or only single words
- Understand a few main ideas from an academic lecture, but leaves out many supporting detail.
To improve their English writing ability, students should:
- Learn more words that describe familiar places, objects, and people.
- Practice writing about everyday topics
- Practice describing what happens in stories they read and programs they watch
- Practice writing sentences about objects and activities they like.
In A2 Level, Score 6-9:
Students write in English to express what they like and give some descriptions. They begin to write short stories. They can:
- Connect between ideas but are sometimes unclear.
- Use words and phrases to communicate meaning.
- Use a limited number of grammatical structures to describe objects and actions.
- Begin to write about a sequence of events.
- Produce basic simple sentences, although with some vocabulary and grammar errors.
- Provide basic answers to informal questions, although sometimes the answers are unclear.
- Express an opinion on a school-related topic, although with little development.
- Understand and convey a few main ideas from an academic lecture, but probably leave out many supporting details.
To improve their English writing ability, students should:
- Learn more words that describe familiar places, objects, and people.
- Practice writing about everyday topics and describing daily habits.
- Practice describing in sentences what happens in stories they read and programs they watch.
- Incorporate connecting words when writing.
In B1 Level, Score 10-12:
Students write in English to express and explain what they like. They begin to expand their descriptions of things and events. They can:
- Show some lexical variation.
- Use linking words or pronouns.
- Use appropriate word choices.
- Use complete statements to communicate ideas.
- Use appropriate grammatical structures.
- Produce some complex sentences, although with occasional vocabulary and grammar errors.
- Usually provide answers to informal questions, and the answers are clear and appropriate.
- Express an opinion on a school-related topic, usually with some development.
- Understand and convey main ideas from an academic lecture, although some details may be left out or be inaccurate.
To improve their writing ability, students should:
- Learn less common words that describe familiar places, objects and people.
- Practice writing with details about places, people, and events in the stories they read.
- Practice writing with complex sentences.
- Practice paraphrasing and summarizing.
In B2 Level, Score 13-16:
Students write in English to expand descriptions, communicate multistep directions, and show lexical variation. They can:
- Identify grammar mistakes.
- Display a varied sentence structure and identifies main points to be developed.
- Include relevant details to expand descriptions, give directions and tell stories.
- Include structures such as connecting words and phrases that make directions and stories easy to follow.
- Show lexical variation.
- Produce complex sentences accurately.
- Provide answers to informal questions, and the answers are clear, complete and appropriate.
- Express an opinion on a school-related topic, almost always with certain detail and development.
- Understand and accurately convey all main ideas and supporting details from an academic lecture.
To improve their writing ability, students should:
- Read and listen to age-appropriate academic content.
- Write about age-appropriate academic content.
- Consider taking the TOEFL ITP.
- Practice essay structures.
